SVstudio is an experimental design studio focusing on design strategies / speculations on diagramatic spatial connections and programmatic relationships, tectonics and materiality in small and medium scale spaces. Digital design tools, rapid prototyping and custom made computer aided machining and manufacturing are part of our design process. We are a design collective who acknowledge the ephemeral dynamic of contemporary cultural production, often involving diverse and innovative architects in each project, while composing a kind of architectural design wunderkammer. At the same time, digital design and craftsmanship are combined with traditional masonry, carpentry and steel works for the morphosis of public and private spaces.
Simos Vamvakidis
Ο Σίμος Βαμβακίδης ξεκίνησε τις σπουδές του στο τμήμα Μαθηματικών του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών. Ωστόσο, σύντομα άλλαξε πορεία, σπουδάζοντας Πολιτικός Μηχανικός στο ΤΕΙ Πειραιά και Αρχιτέκτονας Μηχανικός στο ΕΜΠ. Αποφοίτησε 5ος (βαθμός 8.77) μετά απο 3 χρόνια σπουδών στην αρχιτεκτονική σχολή του ΕΜΠ. Ακολούθησε τις μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές (MArchII) του τμήματος αρχιτεκτονικής του Πανεπιστημίου της Καλιφόρνια στο Λος Άντζελες (UCLA) , ως υπότροφος των ιδρυμάτων Fullbright & Μιχελή. Συνέχισε με διδακτορικές σπουδές στο τμήμα Αρχιτεκτόνων του ΕΜΠ, με υποτροφία απο το Ίδρυμα Ωνάση και στη συνέχεια απο το ΙΚΥ.
Η διδακτορική του διατριβή έχει τίτλο : "Παραγωγικός και Παραμετρικός σχεδιασμός: η σημασιολογική μεταβολή του σχεδιασμού, απο το προκαθορισμένο, στο πεδίο δυνατοτήτων". Η έρευνά του έχει δημοσιευτεί σε βιβλία και διεθνή journals με κριτές, ενώ έχει κάνει παρουσιάσεις σε μια σειρά απο τα συνέδρια eCAADe. Έχει εκδόσει 2 μονογραφές, το Innovative Architecture Strategies (2016) και το Composing Architecture and Interior Design (2018), BIS Publishers, Ολλανδία. Η τρίτη του μονογραφή με τίτλο Apartment Block Design: Massing Matters θα εκδοθεί το 2024 απο τον Routledge, τον μεγαλύτερο εκδοτικό οίκο ακαδημαϊκών εκδόσων.
Έχει εκπονήσει μελέτες για τον σχεδιασμό και κατασκευή δημόσιων χώρων και κτηρίων ως ελεύθερος επαγγελματίας, σε αρχιτεκτονικά γραφεία όπως οι UNstudio στο Άμστερνταμ (για το έργο 100σταθμοί μετρό στο Κατάρ), στο Λος Αντζελες και στην Αθήνα, ενώ παράλληλα έχει 9 διακρίσεις σε διεθνείς αρχιτεκτονικούς διαγωνισμούς. Διδάσκει αρχιτεκτονική σύνθεση για πάνω απο 15 χρόνια, ως Λέκτορας και Yπεύθυνος 2ου έτους σε σχολές στην Αγγλία, Ελλάδα και Λίβανο. Μερικά απο τα πανεπιστήμια στα οποία έχει διδάξει είναι: το πανεπιστήμιο του Λίβερπουλ, το πανεπιστήμιο του Πλύμουθ, το Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο και το Λιβανέζικο Αμερικάνικο Πανεπιστήμιο. Εστιάζει στη διδασκαλία του βασικού συνθετικού μαθήματος κάθε εξαμήνου.
Ενδιαφέρεται για οποιαδήποτε αρχιτεκτονική χειρονομία που διαπραγματεύεται / προτείνει / θέτει ερωτήματα σχετικά με τον τρόπο που βιώνουμε και αλληλεπιδρούμε με τον δημόσιο / ιδιωτικό χώρο, ως άτομο ή ως μέρος μιας ευρύτερης κοινωνικής ομάδας, με βάση τα σημερινά κοινωνικά, οικονομικά και πολιτιστικά δεδομένα / συμφραζόμενα.

Simos Vamvakidis actually began studying Mathematics in the University of Athens, but soon changed his path towards obtaining a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering (TEI of Piraeus) and afterwards a Diploma in Αrchitectural Εngineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He graduated 5th from the NTUA. He was awarded the Fulbright and Mihelis scholarships prior his master’s at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA, MArchII). His PhD was funded by the Onassis foundation, which was followed by the National Greek Scholarships Fund.
His PhD was titled "Generative & Parametric Architectural Design: The semantic shift, from the predefined, to a field of possibilities." His research focuses on Computational Design Thinking and has being published in books and international journals. He also has made a number of conference presentations, such as the eCAADe & SIGraDI conferences. He has published 2 monographs: Innovative Architecture Strategies (2016) and Composing Architeture and Interior Design (2018) with BIS Publishers, Amsterdam.
He has worked on the design & construction of public and private spaces and buildings in architecture offices such as UNstudio in Amsterdam, Los Angeles and Athens. His design proposals for SVstudio have won awards in 9 international architectural competitions. He has being teaching design studios and elective courses as a Lecturer / Year Leader and as an Assistant Professor in the UK, Greece and Lebanon, for more than 15 years. Some of those universities are: Liverpool University, Plymouth University, NTUA School of Architecture, and Lebanese American University (LAU). His teaching focuses on design studios, digital & parametric design and computer aided manufacturing (CAM).
He is interested in any architectural gesture that negotiates /proposes / poses questions related to the way we experience and interact with the public / private spaces, as a single person or as part of a wider social group, based on today’s social, economic and cultural context. He sometimes gives in to technological experimentations that come to clad an architectural idea.
